ELSIE FAE SOMMER (Age 90)

On Wednesday, January 6, 2016, of Silver Spring, MD formerly of Rockville, MD. Beloved wife of the late Charles A. Sommer, CDR USN Ret. Mother of Linda (Chet) Foster and Andrea (Larry) Gibbons. Grandmother of Katherine (Evan) West, Jason Foster, Justin (Chrissie) Foster, Laurence Gibbons, Elizabeth (Jordan) Lieberman and Andrew Gibbons. Also survived by three great-grandsons. Harold Thomas Peterson, Jr. (Age 74)

On Friday, January 15, 2016, of Silver Spring, MD.  Beloved husband of Carol Peterson;  father of Michael J. Peterson (Deirdre Elvis-Peterson) and Kathleen Peterson Wood (Bruce Wood); grandfather of Zoë Lyons, Èva Peterson, Luc Peterson, Carina Peterson and  Xena Peterson.

B.A., Chemistry – Princeton University, 1963; M.N.E., Nuclear Engineering – New York University School of Engineering and Applied Science, 1965; Comprehensive Certification, Emeritus – American Board of Health Physics, 1971; Health Physics Society Fellow; American Nuclear Society Honorary Lifetime Member; American Association for the Advancement of Science Member; Society for Science and the Public Member; International Nuclear Law Association Member

Professor of Nuclear Regulatory Policy, Catholic University; Section Leader, US Department of Energy; Sr. Environmental Health Physicist, US Nuclear Regulatory Commission; Chief, Surveillance Branch, US Environmental Protection Agency; Nuclear Engineer, US Public Health Service, Bureau of Radiological Health

He was a brilliant man who loved his children and grandchildren a great deal. He was a lifelong scientist and lover of nature and animals, amateur entomologist, and purveyor of bad jokes. He was kind and generous, stubborn and intellectually gifted; he taught his children and grandchildren to think critically and find beauty in the everyday. He will be missed and remembered always.

Howard Copeland Williams, Ph.D. (Age 94)

On Monday, January 18, 2016, of Fort Washington, MD.  Beloved husband of Blanche Williams; father of Stephanie Williams and Howard Copeland Williams, Jr.; grandfather of Howard Copeland Williams, III and Jameson Martinez; also survived by godson Al Miller and a host of nieces and nephews.

Howard, a native of Quitman, GA, left Brooks County to pursue a bachelor’s degree in agricultural education from Georgia State University (Savannah State).  He was a World War II veteran in the U.S. Army and later received his masters and doctorate in agricultural economics from The Ohio State University. Howard was a professor at North Carolina A&T University and The Ohio State University. In 1961, he served as a visiting professor of economics at Nommensen University in Indonesia sponsored by the Ford Foundation – National Lutheran Council. In 1964, President Lyndon B. Johnson appointed him as a member of the National Agricultural Advisory Commission for a three-year term.  He moved to Washington, DC, in 1971 to work as agricultural economist at the U.S. Department of Agriculture where he served a two-year appointment as senior agricultural advisor in the Executive Office of the President for the Office of the Special Representative for Trade Negotiations.  He retired from the government in 1987 and pursued an interest in real estate.

Friends may call at Grace Lutheran Church, 10928 Indian Head Hwy, Fort Washington, MD, on Friday, January 29 from 10 to 11 a.m. where Funeral Service will be held at 11 a.m.  Interment Quantico National Cemetery on Tuesday, February 2, 2016 at 2 pm. Joseph Aloysius Hurney, III (Age 70)

On Monday, January 18, 2016, of Rockville, MD. Beloved husband of Kathy Hurney; father of Brian (Stacy) and Kevin (Kari) Hurney; brother of Jim, Dick, and Marty Hurney; grandfather of Evan and Ali Hurney; uncle of Sean, Kim, Lauren, Sara, Katy, Joe and Jim.
